Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education at Sherwood Forest Camp is a series of three to five-day programs
designed to enhance students' awareness of natural science, math, natural history,
environmental education, group dynamics, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

In addition, the program helps students build self-esteem, increase self-awareness,
enhance communication and social skills and promote independence with responsibility.
Outdoor Education is a week of excitement, learning, personal growth and new bonds of
friendship.

Our program is designed for fifth through eighth grade students.  Group sizes range from
ten to thirteen students.  During our spring program our groups are made up by mixing
students from the different schools.  This mixing of schools helps bring about a respect for
the different social, ethnic and cultural traditions that each school brings to camp.

A typical day of Outdoor Education includes flag raising and lowering ceremonies, three
meals, four 1-1/2 hour activity periods, evening programs and campfires. During the day
students will participate in activities such as; the tango tower, land art, nature hikes,
journaling, orienteering, tie dying, team building, initiative games, and teams challenge
course. During our fall program schools can design their own curriculum or we can work
with them to develop a special program to fit their particular students' needs.

Evening Program Options: Action Auction (problem solving skills), Night Hike (learning
about senses), Stargazing, Talent Show/ Campfire Skits, The Beast (communication skills)
,
2-3 Campfires, Bats, Snakes & Civil War history

Sherwood Forest Camp is a pioneer in Outdoor Education, establishing the first program in
the Midwest in 1948.
