Outdoor Education at Sherwood Forest Camp is designed to emphasize team-building and group dynamics. In addition, the program helps students build self-esteem, increase self-awareness, enhance communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills, strengthen social skills, and promote independence with responsibility.
Our program can be two - five days in length with additional activities that will deepen students' awareness and appreciation for journaling, math, natural history, and environmental science. We work closely with schools to develop special programs to fit their particular students' needs. Our program works well with students in 5th through 8th grades, with group sizes ranging from 20 - 30 students.
A typical day of Outdoor Education includes flag rising and lowering ceremonies, three meals, group-based curriculum, evening programs, and campfires. Depending on the length of stay, students will participate in activities such as climbing the Tango Tower, nature hikes, journaling, orienteering, tie dying, team building, initiative games, archery, and teams challenge course.
Evening program options include: Action Auction (problem solving skills), Night Hike (learning about senses), Stargazing, Talent Show/Campfire Skits, The Beast (communication skills), Campfires, Bats, Snakes, and Civil War history.
Sherwood Forest Camp is a pioneer in Outdoor Education, establishing the first program in the Midwest in 1948.
