Program outline: Leadership Journey campers will attend all four sessions of the summer camp program. In the first session campers will continue our CIT program (counselors in training). They will follow the CIT curriculum developed by the camp which focuses on helping campers learn the mission and philosophy of Sherwood Forest Camp, the role of a staff member, helping children have a positive camp experience, addressing problems that campers may face while at camp, and understanding how to implement the camp's emergency procedures. The curriculum is designed to be interactive and experiential.
During the second session of camp Leadership Journey campers will complete our CIT program and plan their graduation. They also complete plans for their final big (14-16 day) trip that includes visiting national parks, exploring educational opportunities at colleges and universities, and undertaking a major community service project.
During the third and fourth sessions the Leadership Journey campers will leave for their big trip. The Leadership Journey program will present campers opportunities to visit and explore nationally recognized wilderness environments and other United Way sponsored agencies outside the local area. On their return they will prepare and present a detailed overview of their experiences to the Shantoah and Sycamore Springs villages.
The campers who successfully complete this final level of Leadership will graduate from the program and be eligible for employment at Sherwood Forest Camp the next summer.
