Challenge is the entry level of the Leadership program for campers.
Eligibility requirements: Age- 12-13 years old Grade in school- 6th and 7th Grade Previous camp experience- not required, but desirable Recommendation- from previous group leaders, village director and/or teacher/counselor School and community standing- good citizen, works to his/her potential Application Preparation- completed by parents with applicant's statement of purpose, interview with camp director, participation in school year meetings, and planning sessions
Program outcomes, goals and objectives:
Leadership Challenge campers will understand the importance of teamwork.
Leadership Challenge campers will know how to read a topographical map and use a compass.
Leadership Challenge campers will assist in the planning of the 5 day trip, gaining knowledge of trip preparation and planning.
Each Leadership Challenge camper will be the group's leader for a specified amount of time, responsible for reading and interpreting the trail using a topographical map.
Each Leadership Challenge camper will be responsible for assisting in daily cooking of all meals.
Leadership Challenge campers will develop an understanding of, respect for, and appreciation of the natural environment.
Program outline: Campers will attend one session of either Girls or Boys Camp. They will prepare for a 5-day trip, by reviewing and learning new skills such as; river canoeing, orienteering- including the use of compass and reading topographical maps, low impact camping, plant identification, and other related outdoor living skills.
The 5-day trip is comprised of 2 different outdoor adventures. The first part is a 2 ½ -day, ten to fourteen mile, backpacking trip on one of the following trails; Middle Section of the Ozark Trail. The second part is a 2 ½ - day, 20-mile, river trip down a section of the Current River starting at Akers Ferry and ending at Round Springs.
Leadership Challenge acquire team work skills, responsibility for one's self, greater independence, new camping skills and a feeling of personal accomplishment.
