Sherwood Forest Camp’s Leadership Training program, founded in 1942, teaches adolescents, primarily from disadvantaged families, to recognize, use and improve their leadership abilities. We challenge youth to build skills and relationships that are transferable to other aspects of their lives. Leadership campers work to achieve three critical milestones in order to achieve long-term success as adults: to be productive, to connect to others, and to navigate a safe course. Each summer up to 90 campers who have finished 7th, 8th 9th or 10th grade, are selected to participate in this program.
Through four years of the program, (Challenge, Trek, Adventure, and Journey) campers plan and complete progressively more challenging adventure based wilderness experiences, both locally and nationally. These include backpacking and canoeing 5 days/30 miles in year one, 8 days/60 miles in year two, and extended trips to states and national parks, colleges and camps in the final years.
At every level of Leadership Training there is also a component of community service. Campers perform community service at camp and at other non-profit organizations both locally and nationally.
Graduates of Sherwood Forest’s Leadership Training program are people who believe in themselves, have high standards, set and meet goals, value diversity, work well with others, and make a significant contribution to make to their communities. Over 50% of the graduates of the Leadership Training program voluntarily maintain their connections with Sherwood Forest. Of these, 90% have risen from poverty, and all are positive, productive, and engaged members of their communities.
